WELCOME TO THE 2014 DOODLE 4 GOOGLE COMPETITION
Since the beginning of time, ideas big and small, practical and playful, have started out as doodles. And we’re ready for more. One talented young artist will see his or her artwork on the Google homepage and receive a $30,000 college scholarship and a $50,000 Google for Education technology grant for his or her school.
Doodles are the fun, surprising, and sometimes spontaneous changes that are made to the Google logo to celebrate holidays, anniversaries, and the lives of famous artists, pioneers, and scientists.

celebrating digital learning day
Digital Learning Day is about giving every child the opportunity to learn in a robust digital environment every day, with the goal of success in college and a career. At Dodge City Middle School we join the Alliance in supporting ideas and actions to make a difference with digital learning. Our school and school district has taken the pledge of actively engaging in the support of the effective use of technology to improve education for all students.
To demonstrate that we are making a difference in teaching students how to use technology to fashion and create deep learning experiences, we are developing new challenges each day for academic growth. These challenges include the creation of individualized student portfolios and student led conferencing, the daily use of technology to explore new digital tools through extension time and a building wide plan to provide consistent practices for teaching digital literacy through accessing, curating and creating purposeful learning. Dodge City Middle School will not only celebrate "Digital Learning Day" but has set aside an entire month dedicated to the way that students can learn, teach each other and explore various ways to use technology to expand individual learning. The month of February is dedicated to teacher share outs about project based learning exemplariness, student projects in QR Codes and Augmented content, and designing high engaging interactive lessons that tap into the modalities of learning. Over the next 30 days, our team of learning experts will provide multiple example of how to create self paced mobile learning experiences by creating interactive designs using multiple formats of digital content. |

step one: how to be a pirate
To be a pirate you will need to have the right tools. Every pirate must have a mobile navigation device (iPad) and a compass (QR Code scanner.) Like all pirates you must plan ahead to chart your course. Every pirate crew must work together and organize your team to recover your treasure in a short amount of time (17 Minutes).
You also need to be ready to sail when the tide and wind are right to lift anchor. Each crew has a ship off date. The first shipping date for the QR Code Treasure Hunt will be the 6th grade Spartans on Tuesday, February 11th. Each team has a scheduled launch date that is posted on the treasure map below. |

Before there was an airplane, there were doodles of cool flying machines. And before there was a submarine, there were doodles of magical underwater sea explorers. Since the beginning of time, ideas big and small, practical and playful, have started out as doodles. And we’re ready for more. One talented young artist will see his or her artwork on the Google homepage and receive a $30,000 college scholarship and a $50,000 Google for Education technology grant for his or her school.
step two: select your crewTo be successful you must first choose who will be on your crew and a ship can only hold a maximum of five crew members. To have a successful voyage you must choose your crew members one day before you ship off into uncharted waters. You will also need to choose the captain of your ship who will keep the crew organized as your ship navigates to each way point for the next clue.
step three: how to hunt for treasureTo navigate uncharted waters you will need to select one of the five Treasure Hunts listed in step four of your voyage. Each of the Treasure Hunts has a name and below each name is your first clue. Those who have charted for buried treasure before you, have discovered that it is best to locate the first waypoint one day before your ship sets sail. On the day you set sail your captain and your crew will need to select only one treasure hunt and head to the first waypoint to get your next set of coordinates (clue.) At every waypoint your crew will be given a new clue and each treasure hunt has a different set of clues. So make sure you stay on course by not veering off to a treasure hunt you did not choose. Remember you only have 17 minutes to find treasure so plan your course before you set sail.
step four: choose you treasure hunt |

First Clue: Here is where you take your binders or iPads (10 Clues Until to Find the Treasure) Treasure Hunt Two: "Around the School"
First Clue: Where are there words on shelves and used trees? (10 Clues to Find the Treasure) Treasure Hunt Three: "Red Hunt"

First Clue: A place you can race, round and round as well as up and down. Tis a place where you can get fit, and wrong to get hit. (7 Clues to Find Treasure) |
step five: navigating for TreasureNow that you know the one and only treasure you seek it is time to navigate to the first waypoint. When you arrive at the first waypoint scan the QR code and a new clue will appear. You and our crew have only a few minutes to decide where to go next. It is important to move at a steady pace. If your ships sail gets to full of wind the ship may run aground by not making a corrective measure. Move quickly but do not move too fast. You must also keep count of the number of waypoints as each treasure hunt has a certain number of clues. Also be leery of the treasure hunts with less clues as you may have to solve a problem in navigation before you can move to the next QR Code clue.
step six: Claim your treasureWhen you reach the last waypoint you must complete a ship's log (Google Form). Each ship's log can be accessed by clicking on the chest with your treasure hunts name. Go to the media center as a port of landing and a Quartermaster will help you fill out your ships log and cash your treasure for a gold doubloon. To claim a doubloon you must enter all of your ship's log questions correctly. The reward of a gold coin will be yours and each of your crew.
